'Development economics' could also be rediscovered within the United States.

Universities around the country could become innovation incubators, with specific areas of research. Federal/state funding could provide an important source of financial stability.

Liberal Arts Colleges could specialize in...liberal arts education, receiving federal/state funding based on quality audits. A wide ranging liberal arts education (no major) is an important part of industrial policy, providing well-rounded individuals who can flourish in a rapidly changing world, and then pursue specialized studies as desired.

The big miss for the US is Japans manufacturing capability. We can’t produce naval vessels at the rate we need. We cannot produce missiles at the rate we need. We should have licensed the Tomahawk as planned, we cannot supply all the weapons Taiwan has purchased. Japan has the Type 12 anti-ship missile, the US should be selling those to Taiwan.

That Constellation class frigate that was canceled could be built more quickly in Japan than in the US. I realize it goes against America Firsters genetics but if we don’t get our ship building and missile production up, we might as well just hand the keys of Asia over to China.

Along those lines, Anduril recently opened a branch in Tokyo and Palmer Luckey is in Japan marketing his vision of mass production of completely locally sourced cruise missiles, air and sea drones and finding factories their that can build them for defense and possibly export.

Interesting, I think it is a good thing. Anduril needs to find scale; money will do that.

Person seal is an archaic leftover that serves a quick death (I know it well as it is also the proof of identify in Taiwan).

Pop culture trope is that abusive parents / spouse will hold the seal of their victim so they become non person (as they can not access their accounts, or verify their identity for and legal transactions). This is holding up the delevelioment of their financial tech.

Your Love of Japan comes through in this comprehensive essay. One thought... a lot of the analysis is based on a western perspective. The community aspect of Japan seems to imply slower transitions .. maybe that is ok. ?

Japan typically has rapid transitions.
