America is ruled by gangsters now
Over the past two days, almost everyone I know has been talking about Trump’s disastrous meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. Almost everyone I’ve talked to about it is a conservative or a centrist. Absolutely no one thought the meeting went well. A couple of people said that Zelensky should have been less combative and more obsequious; no one praised Trump’s or JD Vance’s actions. Everyone is uneasy. Some are downright scared.
What I think DOGE is really up to
Of all the chaos that Donald Trump’s second term is visiting upon America, nothing compares to DOGE. Trump repurposed an existing agency, the U.S. Digital Service, interpreted its mission extremely broadly, and handed control of it to Elon Musk. With the blessing of the Trump administration, DOGE has been going through every part of the U.S. federal government, looking for payments to cancel, programs to suspend, and employees to fire or place on leave.
There is no utopia waiting on the other side of Trump's economy
The carnage in the U.S. stock market continues. The S&P 500 is now down around 7.5% over the last month, and is lower than it was on the day before Trump was elected:
The chaos has arrived
Sometimes it’s fun to be right about big, important predictions. This is not one of those times. A year ago, I wrote that “a vote for Trump is a vote for chaos”, arguing that a second Trump term would feature constant battles between the President and the nation’s institutions:
